    Entropy and Transformation

    The only constant is change.
    Heraclitus

Let’s make no mistake, change is ubiquitous - is, was and will always be. Even the most stable elements in the universe comprise change. For example, there is an ongoing discussion regarding the laws of physics – what we could call the epitome of stability – and whether they might have changed across the history of the universe or, even further, if they ever existed altogether.

In fact, history is nothing more than a set of changes. Not linear change but nevertheless a continuous one. There were moments in which this change was quick, although often it took a very slow, almost imperceptible form. The pace, or rhythm of change can be seen as a proxy for human activity. Mankind hasn’t always been this fast-moving dynamic entity. Quite the contrary, for hundreds of thousands of years humans, and the way humans organized themselves, changed little and, more importantly, at a very slow pace. This change over thousands and thousands of years had little impact in the surrounding context – e.g., ecosystems and meteorology.

Then came a set of revolutions - from the earlier neolithic/agriculture revolution to the more recent scientific/industrial revolution - and the world changed quickly. With a history of about three hundred thousand years, all the major, radical or significant transformations involving humans took place in the last twelve thousand years, moreover, in the last two hundred.

We got ourselves into the most dynamic and frantic period ever lived by humans. A proxy to the intensity of this change is the graph plotting human population over time. Human population changed little and slowly until these revolutions, specifically the industrial revolution two hundred years ago that triggered an exponential population boom. This recent period, also called great acceleration given the fast, quick and impetuous development, led us to a moment where we, as a species, have caused/are causing imbalances in several of the systems of our planet (from mass extinctions to climate change).

In-Between: The unsustainability of the imbalances

The imbalances caused by human activity are, by definition, unsustainable. And they are not subtle. Never in the past have humans created dramatic changes in these global systems, at a global scale. Despite having the ability to destroy ourselves and most of life on the planet (e.g., nuclear Armageddon), humans have always kept the key to such potential devastating threat. That is, this has always been a potential threat, given that it is up to us to decide whether to go down that rabbit hole or not. However, the existential threat posed by the ongoing imbalances on the global systems caused by the human activity of the past two hundred years is not a potential threat. It is not a scenario, one among others. It is reality and we don’t have a key to this problem.

Far from the announced end of history, we are currently at the most important moment humans have ever faced. This liminal status, a suspension before a radical, major change can define contemporaneity. There is, still, a significant part of the world that keeps trying to do business as usual, pushing the problem forward, magically expecting it to go away. Then, there are those who actively search for alternatives. Where do we go from here?

It is at this liminal moment that contemporaneity and TAJ meet. The planet and a space with 40 square meters. A space as a metaphor that encapsulates the biggest question of our time, where do we go from here. TAJ was something else and now lies in a threshold, a transition, a limbo, where creativity will determine what will happen in the future.

For the curatorial project we searched for this in-betweenness. Artists that are one thing and another – artists in-between –, artists that go beyond the borders of a discipline. A sculptor that works mostly with drawing, a photographer that does photographic sculptures and a musician that draws with sound to create sound objects. In-betweenness as a process.

Where do we go from here?

Where do we go from here? Who will inhabit this space? What will they experience? While at the uncertainty limbo we invited three artists to intervene in this space, to elucidate this path of waiting in the in-betweenness of states (liminality), the moment of inspiration and decision which always necessitates letting go of certain possibilities (epiphany), and the beginning of new forms taking shape (emergence).

We begin with Rui Horta Pereira’s "...nem acaba nem começa". His works bring to our conscious awareness those feelings of discomfort and humility that come with sitting with the uncertainty of this question.

Where do we go from here? We need to educate ourselves, we need to learn and act, as H. G. Wells put it “history is a race between education and catastrophe.”

“And you may ask yourself, ‘Well, how did I get here?’” Who, like David Byrne would do, got here by bike?

Rui Soares Costa studied painting at Ar.Co while training and researching in social psychology between Portugal and the US. His research delved into the cognitive processes involved in a Person Memory and the importance of temporal order in the way people make sense about others. Since 2013, Rui has been working exclusively as a visual artist, and exhibiting since 2016. His current research and practice revolve around the perception and representation of time by manipulating its suspension, distension, and compression. In 2016, he started Bull's Eye - Artist-in-Residence Program at his studio in Olho de Boi. More than fifty artists from across the world have participated so far.

Rui is represented by Galeria Salgadeiras.

    Entropia e Transformação

    A única constante é a mudança.
